2013-14 WordMasters Challenge
Meet #1 Results

Thank you to all the teachers, administrators, program directors and parents who "endured" our transition to an upgraded website!  Although we suffered through some unexpected system glitches, we have worked through most of the bugs and are pleased with the improved accuracy and timeliness of our score reporting system.  Now that we have completed one full Challenge Meet cycle, we hope you appreciate the convenience of being able to download WordMasters Challenge materials by logging into your Dashboard on our website.  No more searching for misplaced emails or trying to retrieve attachments despite your school's servers best attempts to thwart your efforts!  Remember, all Challenge-related content (word lists, tests, answer keys and results) are accessible through the "Download Materials" or "View Reports" tabs on your personal Dashboard.  Click here if you need help logging into your Dashboard.

We are pleased to welcome many new schools to the WordMasters Challenge, and want to assure teachers and students alike that success increases along with familiarity with the program.  Most of the highest-scoring teams listed below are from schools who have participated for several years.  In addition, many of the top-scoring junior high/middle school teams are from schools or school districts who participate in the WordMasters Challenge at the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade levels as well.

Please reassure your students that many participants who found the first meet somewhat daunting usually see that their scores improve in Meets #2 and #3 as they have a clearer expectation of the test content and how to prepare effectively.  The important thing to remember is that your goal should be individual and team improvement over time.

In the Blue Division, median team scores were slightly lower than Meet #1 scores from 2012-13 for 7B and 8B, and significantly lower than last year for 3B and 6B.  Only 6 third graders and 4 sixth graders earned a perfect score of 20. Please share these statistics with your students -- many third and sixth graders are participating in their first WordMasters Challenge and should not be discouraged by a low score.  This was a very tough Challenge! Students scoring 18 or better in 3B, 6B, 7B and 8B should be extremely proud of their achievement.

In reviewing the statistics for this season's Meet #1, we notice that an increasing percentage of our total enrollment is comprised of teams competing in the Gold Division --especially in the lower grades. This was an exceptionally difficult Challenge, as median scores were lower than usual for every grade in the Gold Division except 3G.  However, this change can be partially attributed to the increased number of teams competing at the Gold level as well as growth in the percentage of schools reporting by the deadline.   Although the median team score for 8G was 20 points lower than last year, 62 students achieved a perfect score!

Please be sure to examine the charts that follow the lists of Outstanding Teams, which are the best tools to use in assessing your own students' achievements.

Congratulations to the following Outstanding Teams in the Blue Division:
