The 2018-19 WordMasters Challenge™ is off to a blazing start! Median team scores were up compared to last year in over half of our divisions.  Congratulations to all our participants, especially to those representing the Top Ten schools in each division listed below.

Team Leaders and parents, please keep in mind that scores in the WordMasters Challenge™ do not reflect typical classroom results; in many divisions, less than 5% of participants score 18 or above. Also, please reassure your students that they should see their scores improve in Meets #2 and #3 because they will have a clearer expectation of the test content and how to prepare effectively. Remember that everyone's goal should be individual and team improvement over time. The most critical step in the WordMasters Challenge™process is reviewing the tests and discussing the logic behind the analogies. Don't skip this important activity!

In the BLUE DIVISION, the 7B test proved to be especially difficult as demonstrated by a median team score of 133.  And although the median team score for 6B was up 16 points compared to last year's Meet #1, only four sixth graders posted perfect scores. Congratulations to Shylah from Aldrin Elementary School in Reston, VA, and to Jakub, Aeneas and Sasha from NYC Lab Middle School! We'd also like to recognize the 5B team from Northpoint Elementary School in Granger, IN, who posted a perfect team score of 200 points. And kudos to St. John's Episcopal Parish Day School in Tampa, FL, who had three different 5B teams place among the top ten teams in their division!

We saw some extraordinary results in the GOLD DIVISION of the WordMasters Challenge™as well, with three teams posting perfect scores of 200 points: the 7G team from Rancho San Joaquin Middle School in Irvine, CA, and both the 7G and 8G teams from Brentwood Middle School in Brentwood, TN. The 3G test proved to be the most difficult in this division, reflected by the median team score of 135. On the other end of the spectrum, the 6G division posted an unprecedented high median team score of 181 points.

Team Leaders, if you had one or more teams place among the Top Ten in its division and/or any of your students earned a perfect score, we will be sending you a DRAFT press release by January 1st. Since we email the press releases as Word documents, you may edit and distribute the press release at your discretion.  If you would like to create your own press release, click here for a downloadable template.

Be sure to examine the charts that follow the lists of Outstanding Teams, which are the best tools for assessing your own students' achievements.  Please keep in mind that many children are participating in their first WordMasters Challenge™ and should not be discouraged by a low score. As always, students scoring 18 or better should be extremely proud of their achievement.
