Whew! The 28th annual WordMasters Challenge™ has come to a close. We hope your students added many new words to their working vocabularies this year, and made strides in their ability to think critically and analytically. We are already busy pulling together the word lists for the 2015-16 WordMasters Challenge™! Registration is available online now through September 30th -- just click here to register today or download an order form.
At the conclusion of each year’s Challenge, we offer three categories of national individual recognition. “Highest Honors” are reserved for those students who have finished among the top 10-15 students in the country at their grade level. “High Honors” are for those students who have finished among the top 2% of all competitors at their grade levels, and “Honorable Mention” is for those who have finished in the top 10%. The score required to qualify for these honors varies from year to year. The charts below show the minimum score required for each level of honor at each grade level for the 2014-15 WordMasters Challenge™.
Those of you who have been participating in the WordMasters Challenge™ for many years may notice that the minumum scores for achieving High Honors and Honorable Mention are lower than previous years. This drop is simply due to the change in our score reporting system that allows schools to report all their student scores (instead of only the top ten scores). As a result, the number of students included in the "top 2%" and "top 10%" has increased significantly, which in turn affects the minumum score required to qualify. As more and more schools begin to report all of their scores, these charts will provide a more accurate snapshot of student performance across the country. We will be taking a closer look at the scoring database over the summer to determine if we need to tinker with the formula for determining the High Honors and Honorable Mention cutoffs.
