Hats off to all the students who are participating in the 2020-2021 WordMasters Challenge™! Although a number of our long-term participating schools have been forced to take a year off from the competition due to COVID-19 issues, most of our Team Leaders and students have been able to continue with the WordMasters Challenge through a combination of in-person and virtual platforms. We appreciate your flexibility as well as the positive feedback we have received regarding our attempts to make preparation for and administration of the Challenge a bit easier through the use of Google tools.
Meet #1 results are summarized below; congratulations to all our participants, especially those representing the Top Ten schools in each division as well as the students who achieved a perfect score of 20 on the first of three Challenge tests.
Team Leaders and parents, please keep in mind that scores in the WordMasters Challenge™ do not reflect typical classroom results; in many divisions, less than 5% of participants score 18 or above. Also, please reassure your students that they should see their scores improve in Meets #2 and #3 because they will have a clearer expectation of the test content and how to prepare effectively. Remember that everyone's goal should be individual and team improvement over time. The most critical step in the WordMasters Challenge™process is reviewing the tests and discussing the logic behind the analogies. Don't skip this important activity!
In the BLUE DIVISION, two teams from Beaufort County Schools scored a perfect 200 points -- kudos to the third graders from Okatie Elementary School and the fourth graders from Red Cedar Elementary School! Other outstanding performances from Beaufort County include the eighth graders from River Ridge Academy (team score of 198 points) and the fourth grade team from Bluffton Elementary School that placed tenth in its division. Perennial strongholds Big Apple Academy from NYC and Solomon Schecter Day School of Greater Boston each placed teams among the Top Ten in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The fifth and seventh grade tests proved especially challenging, with only 6 perfect scores nationwide for 5B and four perfect scores for 7B. Special congratulations to these ten young WordMasters, who are named in the Perfect Score links below the chart of meet statistics.
We saw some extraordinary results in the GOLD DIVISION of the WordMasters Challenge™as well. Two teams from Georgia earned perfect scores of 200: the fifth graders from Pace Academy in Atlanta and the seventh grade team from Hull Middle School in Duluth. Local rivalries in Lake Central School Corporation (northwestern Indiana) produced three Top Ten teams in the third grade: Bibich Elementary, Peifer Elementary and Protsman Elementary Schools. Similarly, three fourth grade teams representing CCSD 15 schools in Palatine, Illinois, placed within the Top Ten of their division: Pleasant Hill School, Central Road School and Frank C. Whiteley School. Continuing their strong tradition, Spartanburg School District 7 from South Carolina placed at least one team among the Top Ten in third, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
Team Leaders, if you had one or more teams place among the Top Ten in its division and/or any of your students earned a perfect score, we will be sending you a DRAFT press release by January 1st. Since we email the press releases as Word documents, you may edit and distribute the press release at your discretion. If you would like to create your own press release, click here for a downloadable template.
Be sure to examine the charts that follow the lists of Outstanding Teams, which are the best tools for assessing your own students' achievements. Please keep in mind that many children are participating in their first WordMasters Challenge™ and should not be discouraged by a low score. As always, students scoring 18 or better should be extremely proud of their achievement.
